Compound from Vegetables Enhances and Improves Chemotherapy’s Impact

Remember when you were a kid and your mom would promise all kinds of wonderful impacts from eating your vegetables? Carrots would improve your vision, spinach would make you strong, and if you’d just eat your broccoli you’d practically become a superhero. There’s no doubt that Mom was right about vegetables being good for you, but she probably had no idea that vegetables were so powerful that they would actually prove to be a powerful agent against cancer. But that is exactly what French researchers have determined after conducting a study on the impact of combining a compound derived from cruciferous vegetables with the powerful chemotherapy drug Cisplatin.

Cruciferous vegetables are staples of a healthy diet. They include Brussels sprouts, collard greens, kale, broccoli, bok choy, arugula and cabbage. They contain high levels of essential nutrients. Cancer researchers have used these vegetables to create a compound called PEITC which has been found to provide important therapeutic benefits for those diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma. According to a study published in the journal Oncotarget, previous studies had shown that it had a beneficial impact on cancer, and the same has been true of the chemotherapy agent. so the French researchers set out to determine whether cisplatin and PEITC could be combined to provide an effective therapy for mesothelioma. What they found was that the two together worked even better than either one had on their own, and that when they were delivered as a combination they provided an advantage over traditional chemotherapy by not attacking healthy cells.

Cisplatin is a well-known protocol in cancer, and when combined with pemetrexed it provides the traditional gold standard treatment for those diagnosed with mesothelioma, an intractable and challenging fatal com of cancer. The French study analyzed the real impact of these drugs and found that only half of patients showed improvement on this regimen: it provided only modest benefits with many harmful side effects. Referring back to a 2013 study that showed that when Cisplatin was combined with PEITC it showed benefits for lung cancer patients, the French researchers decided to test the impact in the laboratory and found that the compound killed 80 percent of mesothelioma cells, while cisplatin alone only killed 40 percent of them. They also found that by increasing the dosage they made the combination more powerful and effective.

When combining the fact that the impactor the PEITC/cisplatin combination on mesothelioma cells was greater while not impacting healthy cells, the study has generated a great deal of interest and optimism.
