Gene Found in Mesothelioma Patients May Determine Effectiveness of Chemotherapy

One of the most frustrating things for patients who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma is learning that the disease is so resistant to standard treatments.  Though innovative treatments for cancers of all types have continued to provide improved results and longer survival rates, this rare form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos continues to be intractable. Now scientists in Vienna believe they may have found one of the reasons why.

Researchers from the Medical University of Vienna have released the results of a study done on the TP53 gene, which is found in many cancers including in mesothelioma. What they have found is that when TP53 is mutated in cancer – which happens frequently — it has a direct effect on whether chemotherapy protocols will be effective.

The study was led by cancer surgeon Daniela Kandioler of the University Department of Surgery at MediUni Vienna. Though this particular study involved a large number of colorectal cancer patients, the results appear to be applied to all other types of cancers as well: The finding is that the effectiveness of chemotherapy is entirely dependent upon whether or not the TP53 gene within the cancerous tumor was mutated.

In a statement, Dr. Kandioler said, “Mutations in this gene have an extremely positive or extremely negative impact upon the patient’s survival. Our p53Research research group at MediUni Vienna has made a breakthrough with this finding. It will now be possible to use a genetic test to establish which treatments will be effective and which will be harmful for a particular patient.”

Identifying predictive biomarkers such as mutations this gene is an important step for those treating mesothelioma patients. The more information is available on a specific patient’s illness and prognosis, the better their oncologists and other members of their care team are able to select the course of treatment that makes the most sense for them.

Finding the right approach is important for mesothelioma patients, not only when it comes to their medical treatment but also in many other life decisions. It is important to find answers that provide you with the best quality of life and allow you to find peace and comfort.
