Mesothelioma Patients Look to Cancer Moonshot With Hope

People who have been diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma are constantly on the lookout for medical breakthroughs and innovations that might lead to a cure for their rare and fatal form of cancer and that’s what the Cancer Moonshot program is all about. First announced during the administration of President Barack Obama, Cancer Moonshot 2020 is a billion dollar initiative that hopes to find a cure for all types of cancers by recreating the same level of research and innovation that drove the Space Race during the 1960s under President John F. Kennedy.

Though the moonshot program is multi-faceted, one of its biggest focuses is in an area that is of special interest to patients with malignant mesothelioma: immunotherapy. The use of targeted immunotherapy is at the forefront of the type of personalized medical protocol that mesothelioma researchers believe provide the greatest hope for patients with cancers that have not proven responsive to traditional treatments like chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The goal of the moonshot program is to hasten the speed of discovery, facilitating and meeting the needs of researchers in a way that will allow them to make progress in half of the time that would normally be expected. So far this has meant providing funding, but also creating a way for researchers to have faster access to the newest medications for testing, and facilitating greater collaboration between all stakeholders, including pharmaceutical companies, research organizations, and other innovators so that as new products are developed, they can get out of research and development and into a clinical setting faster. The program has also sought buy-in from tech companies to allow the data that is collected to be more readily accessible.

For people in the mesothelioma community, the inroads that have already been made as a result of the Cancer Moonshot 2020 program are reason for optimism. As new technologies and treatment protocols reach the field in a faster way and greater access to clinical data is provided between research organizations, more people are able to learn from the results of clinical data. This allows healthcare professionals to move forward at a much faster pace to find a cure for this tragic asbestos-related disease.
