New Study Links Diet to Increased Risk of Lung Cancer – May Include Mesothelioma
A new study released by a team of researchers from MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston has revealed that there is a higher risk of being diagnosed with lung cancer in those who eat a starchy, high-sugar diet. Oncologists and mesothelioma experts are carefully reviewing the material, as it may provide a helpful caution for those who are at risk of being diagnosed with mesothelioma following exposure to asbestos.
The study asked almost 2,000 individuals who had recently been diagnosed with lung cancer about their eating habits and compared them to the same results from a group that did not have cancer. They were also asked about other factors in their lives, including smoking, income, work history and more. What they found was that those who had foods that had a high glycemic index were about 50 percent more likely to be diagnosed with lung cancer. Though the research is preliminary, it did find that this link was most pronounced in those that had never smoked. Doctors believe that the reason behind their findings is that foods that are high glycemic make the body produce insulin, and this encourages the growth of cells, including cancer cells. A high consumption of high-glycemic foods may actually be making the cancer cells proliferate even faster than they would normally.
According to the study’s lead author Dr. Xifeng Wu,
“The results from this study suggest that, besides maintaining healthy lifestyles, reducing the consumption of foods and beverages with high glycemic index may serve as a means to lower the risk of lung cancer.” He goes on to say, “Previous studies have investigated the association between glycemic index and the related measure glycemic load, and a variety of cancers including colorectal, stomach, pancreas, endometrial, ovarian, prostate, and thyroid.”
Mesothelioma is a rare and always fatal form of cancer that is a direct result of being exposed to asbestos. Scientists do not have a good understanding of why some people who are exposed to the carcinogen end up with the disease while others don’t, leaving those who know that they are risk due to occupational or secondary exposure wondering what they can do to improve their chances of remaining healthy. Though this new study does not specifically reference mesothelioma, it offers those who have been exposed to asbestos a tangible change that they can make in their nutritional habits that may help them to avoid or slow the deadly disease.
