Study Shows Hidden Asbestos Link Common in Mesothelioma of Unknown Origin

asbestosWhen a person is diagnosed with mesothelioma, the rare and deadly form of cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos, they have many questions. For some, the issue of where their exposure came from is not a mystery: they know or quickly discover that they worked in an occupation where asbestos use was common. For other mesothelioma patients, however, the answer is harder to find, and despite their best efforts they are unable to find a link between the lives they have lead and exposure to asbestos. Though these patients’ medical charts may identify them as having “asbestos exposure unknown”, a study conducted by researchers at the University of Milan has determined that in most cases, digging deeper revealed the source of their exposure.

Their study, titled “Malignant mesotheliomas with unknown exposure to asbestos: a re-examination,” appeared in the Italian medical journal La Medicina Del lavoro”. The scientists reevaluated 364 cases in which patients’ mesothelioma had been identified as being of unknown origin. They found that by interviewing family members, friends and colleagues, and doing further exploration into various occupational settings, they were able to pinpoint an exposure to asbestos with certainty in over 12 percent of the cases, and another 62% as being caused by either possible or certain occupational exposure. The remaining 36% of cases were identified as having been exposed in their home or leisure-time environment.

Identifying the source of a mesothelioma victim’s asbestos exposure is one of the most important steps in the process of filing a mesothelioma lawsuit, and the answer is not always clear. Many Americans have been exposed to the deadly material without realizing it, as in addition to it being commonly used in a variety of work settings, it was also incorporated in the manufacture of common household items such as hairdryers, as well as in cosmetic products such as talcum powder and makeup.

Manufacturers that used asbestos in products exposed consumers and workers alike to the risk of serious asbestos-related diseases, and the American justice system has made it possible for victims of those diseases to hold those companies legally responsible for the damages that they have caused. Though you may not be aware of where you were exposed to asbestos, an experienced mesothelioma law firm will be able to analyze your life and work history to methodically determine the source of your asbestos exposure.
