Study Shows Patients With Cancers Like Mesothelioma Go Online for Information

If you or someone you love was diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma and you turned to the Internet for help, you’re not alone. According to a recently completed study conducted by the health information brand Healthline, having digital information immediately available is increasingly important and valued by those who have been diagnosed with all types of cancer. The study, titled “State of Cancer,” set out to analyze exactly how the availability of information on the world wide web is impacting the decisions that patients are making about treatment and other important decisions that they face. What the researchers found is that the Internet is an essential tool being used by all types of patients.

Though it is not clear whether any mesothelioma patients were included in the participants, the study examined the activities of 1,500 adults living in the United States who were diagnosed with a wide variety of different types of cancers during the month of September 2017. The group was purposely diverse in background and age because the researchers wanted to see what type of variations existed between different generations. Speaking of the study’s importance, Ingrid Eberly, vice president of brand marketing said, “Healthline is committed to being an ally to our user, and to do that we have to understand their needs and have to understand the nuances of generational differences.” What they found was that 89% of patients diagnosed with cancer search for information online after receiving a diagnosis, with almost half of them searching for information on the same day. The younger the patient, the more quickly they began their online search: 49% of millennials searched on the same day; 44% of those in Generation X searched on the same day; and 29% of Baby Boomers searched on the same day.

Patients diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma are often encouraged to seek help from a support group, and this was another area that the study reviewed, finding that younger patients were three times more likely than Baby Boomers to turn online for support. Health advocates reviewing this information say this reflects a need for physicians to be more encouraging when speaking to patients about the importance of this aspect of their cancer journey.

With more and more mesothelioma patients going online to help them make informed decisions, the Patient Advocates at Mesothelioma.net take their responsibility very seriously. Contact us today at 1-800-692-8608 to learn more about how we can help.
