Treating Peritoneal Mesothelioma
Dr. Taub has had a varied medical career, with many cancer-related specializations, but it is his work with mesothelioma that has stood out and with which he has made a real difference in the lives of patients. At the Columbia Medical Center he helps patients with peritoneal mesothelioma, the second most common type of this rare cancer, by administering an innovative treatment.
The treatment involves the use of chemotherapy in the abdominal cavity after surgery. Peritoneal mesothelioma attacks the tissue that lines the organs of the abdominal cavity. After surgeons remove the bulk of tumors, heated chemotherapy drugs can then be circulated directly in the abdomen to kill remaining cancer cells. This type of treatment has proven to be effective at extending the lives of patients with peritoneal mesothelioma who otherwise had little hope of successful treatment options.
Dr. Taub has conducted extensive and varied research over his long career and has published and co-authored over 100 scholarly articles and presentations. Much of his research work has been in leading clinical trials and working with patients. These trials have included the testing of new chemotherapy drugs to treat mesothelioma, lung-sparing surgical treatments for pleural mesothelioma, and trimodal approaches to treating peritoneal mesothelioma.
Professional Organizations, Awards, and Honors

These include the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the American Society of Hematology, the American Society for Clinical Oncology, the American Association for Cancer Research, and the New York Academy of Sciences, among many others. His awards have included the National Institutes of Health Career Development Award, the Leukemia Society Scholar Award, and the Emil Conason Memorial Research Award.
Dr. Taub’s distinguished and long career in medicine has earned him accolades from peers, but more importantly the respect and admiration of patients. By specializing in rare and difficult diseases like mesothelioma, Dr. Taub has helped so many who were without hope.
