Robert Taub, M.D.

Over the many years of his long career in medicine, Dr. Robert Taub has served in many roles, most recently as Professor of Clinical Medicine at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons and as a member of the school’s Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Taub is a medical oncologist with a special interest in the diagnosis and treatment of mesothelioma.

He is board certified in internal medicine, hematology, clinical immunology, and oncology. He has won several awards for his work in research and clinical trials, and has been a member of numerous professional organizations. His work with patients, especially those with devastating diseases like mesothelioma, is well known and respected in the medical community.

Education and Early Career

Dr. Taub earned his undergraduate degree from Yeshiva University and his medical degree from the Yale University School of Medicine. He also earned a PhD in Zoology from London University. He completed residency programs at the New England Medical Center and at Tufts University. His residencies included internal medicine and anatomic and clinical pathology.

In his career Dr. Taub has come to develop several specialties. These include medical oncology with a special interest in sarcomas, hematology, and mesothelioma. Some of his early positions before he came to Columbia included an assistant professorship at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He was also an attending physician at Mount Sinai Hospital. He was an American Cancer Society Professor of Clinical Oncology. Before coming to Columbia University, he held several positions at the Medical College of Virginia: Professor of Internal Medicine and Microbiology, Chief Attending Oncologist, and Chairman of the Division of Medical Oncology.

Treating Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Dr. Taub has had a varied medical career, with many cancer-related specializations, but it is his work with mesothelioma that has stood out and with which he has made a real difference in the lives of patients. At the Columbia Medical Center he helps patients with peritoneal mesothelioma, the second most common type of this rare cancer, by administering an innovative treatment.

The treatment involves the use of chemotherapy in the abdominal cavity after surgery. Peritoneal mesothelioma attacks the tissue that lines the organs of the abdominal cavity. After surgeons remove the bulk of tumors, heated chemotherapy drugs can then be circulated directly in the abdomen to kill remaining cancer cells. This type of treatment has proven to be effective at extending the lives of patients with peritoneal mesothelioma who otherwise had little hope of successful treatment options.

Clinical Trials

Dr. Taub has conducted extensive and varied research over his long career and has published and co-authored over 100 scholarly articles and presentations. Much of his research work has been in leading clinical trials and working with patients. These trials have included the testing of new chemotherapy drugs to treat mesothelioma, lung-sparing surgical treatments for pleural mesothelioma, and trimodal approaches to treating peritoneal mesothelioma.

Professional Organizations, Awards, and Honors

Thanks to his long and dedicated medical career, with his devotion to both patient care and research, Dr. Taub has earned a number of honors and has been the member of many prestigious professional medical organizations. These include the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the American Society of Hematology, the American Society for Clinical Oncology, the American Association for Cancer Research, and the New York Academy of Sciences, among many others. His awards have included the National Institutes of Health Career Development Award, the Leukemia Society Scholar Award, and the Emil Conason Memorial Research Award.

Dr. Taub’s distinguished and long career in medicine has earned him accolades from peers, but more importantly the respect and admiration of patients. By specializing in rare and difficult diseases like mesothelioma, Dr. Taub has helped so many who were without hope. Many patients remember him as a caring and passionate doctor who helped them get through their illnesses.
