American Physician and Nurse Scientist Named to International Mesothelioma Group

Two of America’s most highly respected mesothelioma professionals have been named to new positions at the prestigious International Mesothelioma Interest Group (iMig). Joseph Friedberg, MD, FACS, and Melissa Culligan, RN, BSN, MSc, PhD candidate will bring the expertise that they deploy at Temple Health, the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, and Fox Chase Cancer Center to their roles.

Temple Physician is Recognized as Leader in Mesothelioma Surgery

Dr. Joseph Friedberg is Co-Director of the Temple-Fox Chase Cancer Center’s Mesothelioma and Pleural Disease Program. In addition to that role, he is also Thoracic Surgeon-In-Chief for Temple Health, Professor of Thoracic Medicine and Surgery, and Professor in the Division of Thoracic Surgery at Fox Chase Cancer Center. He is widely recognized for his ground-breaking NIH-funded mesothelioma research and for being a pioneer in the lung-sparing surgical technique of extrapleural pneumonectomy and decortication.

Dr. Friedberg also serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation and previously served on the Mesothelioma Committee for the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC). 

Noted Fox Chase Researcher Selected to Mesothelioma Group’s Board of Directors

Melissa Culligan is Dr. Friedberg’s Co-Director of the Temple-Fox Chase Cancer Center’s Mesothelioma and Pleural Disease Program. She has more than 30 years of experience in the field of thoracic surgery and is currently pursuing a doctoral research project focusing on the quality of life of pleural mesothelioma patients undergoing lung-sparing surgery. 

She is also the Director of Thoracic Surgery Research in the Department of Thoracic Medicine and Surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University. She is also past President of the International Thoracic Oncology Nursing Forum and currently serves on that group’s steering committee and is Chair of the Nursing And Allied Health Professionals Committee for the IASLC.

iMig Organization Facilitates Research, Education, and Collaboration Among Mesothelioma Professionals

The International Mesothelioma Interest Group brings together doctors, nurses, scientists, researchers, and advocates to work together on behalf of mesothelioma patients around the world. The group recently held its annual meeting in Lille, France, and at that time Ms. Culligan was elected to its Board of Directors. Dr. Friedberg, previously appointed to the board, was elected to the position of Secretary.
