Delays in Treatment Approvals Threaten Mesothelioma Care

A recent report by CBS News highlighted an issue facing countless victims of malignant mesothelioma: Delays in the authorization process are keeping cancer patients from getting the treatment they desperately need. Both the Veterans Health Administration and private insurance companies are taking so long to provide prior approval — and often denying authorization — that patients’ ongoing care is threatened.

CBS News Report Rings True for Mesothelioma Patients

Though the story published by CBS on December 22nd does not specifically address mesothelioma, it introduces a veteran who sought care through the VA’s Community Care Program, which was created to allow veterans greater access to specialized care.

It was hoped that the Community Care Program would prove beneficial to veterans with rare diseases like mesothelioma that require intervention from oncologists experienced in treating rare malignancies. But the investigative report reveals that the prior authorization process has become a nightmare, with many veterans waiting months to get the go-ahead on much-needed procedures. Even getting approval for routine imaging scans can take as long as three months.

Approvals for Mesothelioma Care Face Similar Slowdowns from Commercial Insurers

The VA system is not the only one proving to be a roadblock for mesothelioma victims and other cancer patients. Though pre-approval processes are meant to reduce unnecessary, ineffective, or duplicate spending, patients say that they have become a way for companies to avoid paying for expensive care and treatments.

Delays in authorization or the need to appeal denials can be particularly stressful for patients diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma, which moves aggressively and often claims patients’ lives within months of diagnosis. Treatment must begin immediately to extend patient survival, and days lost can be deadly.
