Two of the deadliest consequences of asbestos exposure are malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer. Early detection provides the best chance for improved outcomes for both diseases and now researchers from the University of Cambridge have developed a test that uses urine to spot the first signs of early lung cancer in lab animals. They are hoping that the technology works in humans, too, and that it can be modified to work with other types of cancer to enable early diagnosis.
Injectable Sensor Uses Protein in “Zombie Cells” to Detect Early Lung Cancer
Although the early lung cancer test has yet to enter clinical trials, it is generating significant excitement from oncologists around the world, including those who treat malignant mesothelioma. The test takes advantage of cells known as “zombie cells” that can’t grow and divide when alive but which can reprogram their microenvironment and promote cancer cell development. The researchers identified a specific protein excreted by these cells in lung tissue and designed a probe that divides in two in the protein’s presence.
When the zombie cells release the protein that signals the earliest development of lung cancer, half of the probe travels to the kidneys and is released in urine. According to Dr. Ljiljana Fruk, PhD, “Once in urine, this part of the probe is too small to be detected, but it can be made visible by adding a bit of silver solution to it. By monitoring the color of urine after the injection of the probe, we can say if cells are present in the lungs, that would indicate the early signs of pathological changes that might lead to cancer.”
Urine Test for Lung Cancer Has Potential for Use in Mesothelioma and Other Malignancies
The advantage of an early detection test is that it provides far more treatment options, especially for difficult-to-treat cancers like lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma. If the new urine test proves effective and safe in humans, it could provide a much-needed, cost-effective tool that facilitates quick, accurate early detection.
Speaking of their discovery, Dr. Fruk said, “We have almost completed a functional urine test to detect zombie cells in lung cancer, which will spot cancer earlier and avoid the need for invasive procedures, but this test does have the potential for other cancers.”
