An asbestos contractor in Jefferson County, Colorado, has been convicted of multiple crimes after his negligent, fraudulent practices put his employees, a client, and an entire neighborhood at risk of future mesothelioma diagnoses. The man improperly removed and dumped asbestos, charging an elderly man $70,000 for the substandard work.
Jury Finds Contractor Guilty in Actions That Risk Mesothelioma Diagnoses
According to state investigators, the risk of future mesothelioma diagnoses in the Arvada neighborhood came after Lance Slayton was hired by the 82-year-old owner of a fire-damaged fourplex rental property in 2022 to perform clean-up and repairs, including asbestos abatement. The state attorney general’s office found that rather than handle the toxic material appropriately, his company improperly removed and dumped asbestos-containing materials, putting both his workers and residents exposed to the materials at risk.
A jury hearing the case found the contractor guilty of numerous charges. He was convicted of violating the Air Quality Control Act as a result of the mishandling of asbestos and additional charges for specific crimes against the client. The charges included criminal exploitation of an at-risk person, them from an at-risk person, and intentionally causing and contributing to a hazardous substance incident.
Attorney General Expresses Concern Over Public Health Following Mesothelioma Risk
Speaking of his concerns over the improper handling of asbestos and the long-term mesothelioma risk for those affected, Attorney General Phil Weiser said, “This case highlights the grave consequences of putting profit over safety and the well-being of our most vulnerable citizens. This conviction reinforces our commitment to safeguard public health, protect older Coloradans from scams, and hold fraudulent contractors accountable.”
