In late November of last year, John D. Read and Sandra Read of California filed a mesothelioma lawsuit against 3M Company, Air & Liquid Systems Corporation, and dozens of others, blaming the companies for negligently exposing him to asbestos resulting in his diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma. The couple accuses the named defendants of knowing that the substance was carcinogenic but failing to provide him with information concerning protection and concealing the nature of his industrial and occupational exposure during his time on Navy ships and while working as a firefighter.

Mesothelioma Victim Served in the Navy and as a Firefighter
According to the couple’s claim, the mesothelioma victim served as a boiler technician in the United States Navy from approximately 1960 until 1967. In that role, he served aboard various Navy ships, including the USS Agerholm and the USS Prichett, both on navigable waters and during periods when the ships were docked at various naval shipyards, including Mare Island, San Diego, and Longo Beach Naval Shipyards.
The Reads blame John’s mesothelioma on his time in the Navy as well as his work following his service. After being honorably discharged in 1967, Mr. Read worked as a firefighter for the Brea Fire Department in Brea, California from 1967 to 1972, and the Santa Fe Springs Fire Department in Santa Fe Springs, California, from 1972 to 1996. Like many firefighters, during that time, he was again exposed to asbestos in multiple products and ways.
Mesothelioma Lawsuit Seeks Compensation for Damages Suffered
The mesothelioma victim and his wife filed their lawsuit citing multiple causes of action, including negligence, strict liability, false representation, intentional failure to warn, and loss of consortium. They are seeking general damages, loss of income, wages, earning potential, and compensation for Mr. Read’s medical and related expenses for him, loss of consortium for Mrs. Read, and exemplary and punitive damages for both of them. The case was recently referred for dispute resolution in hopes of a settlement.
