Documentary Shines Light on Mesothelioma’s Link to Cosmetic Products

Despite the best efforts of asbestos awareness advocates, malignant mesothelioma has remained a relative unknown among the general public. But that may change now that the illness has been introduced through HBO Max’s multi-part documentary, “Not So Pretty.”

“Not So Pretty” Episode Reveals Link Between Talc, Cosmetic Products, and Mesothelioma

“Not So Pretty” is an investigative expose of the beauty industry, and its first episode, “Makeup,” was devoted to asbestos in talcum-based products, and introduced victims of malignant mesothelioma. The episode mentioned both Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder product and the makeup kits sold by mall retailer Claire’s.

Included in the episode was a profile of makeup enthusiast Corrin Ortillo, who was diagnosed with mesothelioma after years of using products she claims contained asbestos-contaminated talc. Also featured was 78-year-old former obstetrician-gynecologist Thomas McHattie, who was diagnosed with the rare and deadly form of cancer after years of using Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder, and who is one of thousands who have filed suit against the corporate giant.

Documentary Details Allegations Regarding Asbestos in Cosmetics

In addition to introducing people who blame their mesothelioma on years of use of cosmetic products they say were contaminated with asbestos, the documentary provides details regarding Johnson & Johnson’s 1971 experiments that involved injecting the toxic material into the lower backs of Pennsylvania inmates. It also mentions accusations that the company specifically marketed their product to black communities that had less access to medical care.

In the face of tens of thousands of lawsuits filed by mesothelioma- and ovarian-cancer-afflicted consumers accusing the company of negligence, Johnson & Johnson’s has discontinued selling their baby powder product in the United States. While consumers may have been unaware of the reasons behind that particular product disappearing, “Not So Pretty” will make it clear, and put them on notice to start paying closer attention to the ingredient list for the cosmetic products that they use.
