Texas scientists have developed a new cancer-killing technique that may one day benefit patients with mesothelioma and other cancers that have proven resistant to conventional treatments. Called the “molecular jackhammer,” the approach reportedly destroys 99% of cancer cells in laboratory cultures.
Mesothelioma Research Community Hopeful About New Technique
The molecular jackhammer approach, developed by researchers from Rice University, Texas A&M, and the University of Texas and first published in Nature Chemistry in 2023, uses a mechanical destruction mechanism that could be relevant for mesothelioma, a cancer notorious for its resistance to standard therapies. It employs synthetic dyes already widely used in medical imaging, stimulating them with near-infrared light to vibrate at approximately 40 trillion oscillations per second. This vibration physically tears apart cancer cells’ membranes, killing them within minutes.
Mesothelioma tumors have repeatedly demonstrated the ability to develop resistance to chemotherapy and immunotherapy over time, but because the molecular jackhammer’s killing mechanism is mechanical rather than chemical, the aggressive cells are unlikely to develop resistance to it. In mouse models of melanoma, half the animals became cancer-free following treatment—results that demonstrate meaningful real-world efficacy beyond laboratory cell cultures.
Near-Infrared Light Could Reach Mesothelioma Cells in Deep Tissue
The use of near-infrared light is especially significant for mesothelioma treatment because it penetrates deeper into the body than visible light. This has the potential to facilitate the treatment of cancer cells in internal organs without requiring surgery. Mesothelioma grows as a thin, irregular lining across the entire lung surface, making complete surgical removal extraordinarily difficult, so a technique capable of delivering cancer-killing vibrations deep into the chest cavity without open surgery could represent a meaningful advance.
Since the group’s original discovery, Rice University chemist James Tour and colleagues published a 2024 follow-up in Advanced Science describing numerous variations of molecular jackhammers in development, opening the door to targeting different cancer types with greater precision. The researchers also addressed safety concerns, finding that low doses of unactivated molecular jackhammers are quickly internalized and cleared by normal cells. The mesothelioma research community will continue monitoring this new technique closely as it advances toward human trials.
