Asbestos-contaminated talc has been blamed for thousands of cases of malignant mesothelioma and ovarian cancer. While most of the attention has been paid to brand-name products like Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder, that company discontinued its use of talc. Others continue using it, including the Dynacare Baby Powder distributed across the nation and sold online on Amazon’s popular website. This week, the Dynarex Corporation expanded an earlier recall of the product due to potential contamination.
Fearing Mesothelioma, Talc Company Urges Discontinued Use
Asbestos, the mineral that has been directly linked to malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis, and other serious and deadly illnesses, is frequently found in close proximity to talc deposits. Experts say it is nearly impossible to mine talc without experiencing some asbestos contamination, and this reality is what’s behind the many illnesses that have been blamed on exposure to cosmetic talc products.
Facing over 60,000 mesothelioma and ovarian cancer lawsuits, Johnson & Johnson has stopped using talc in its cosmetic powder products and replaced it with cornstarch, but other companies, including Dynarex Corporation, have not followed suit. The company first issued a recall on September 19th of a limited number of its products, but yesterday, it expanded its recall from 12 states to 35. The product is sold in both 4 oz and 14 oz bottles.
Thirty-five States Affected by Talc Recall Over Mesothelioma Fears
Fearing future liability for illnesses including mesothelioma and ovarian cancer, the company has recalled all Dynacare Baby Powder products sold on or after January 18th, 2024 in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin and online through Amazon.com.
In a statement about the recall, the company said, “Upon further investigation, we have identified additional lots of products that may contain asbestos due to using the same bulk talc material. The company has ceased the distribution of the product as an investigation is proceeding to determine what caused the contamination of the talc.”
