Mesothelioma Victim’s Family Reaches Settlement with Prominent Aerospace Companies

Malignant mesothelioma deaths lead to grief and financial hardship. The painful loss of loved ones and insurmountable medical bills lead many families to file lawsuits against the companies that are responsible. While some do battle for years, others allow their mesothelioma attorneys to settle their claims out of court so they can be compensated for their loss and move on. In a recent case, the family of a former U.S. Air Force aircraft technician reached an agreement with some of the biggest defense companies in the country.

Raytheon, Koch Industries, Rohr Named in Mesothelioma Lawsuit

The mesothelioma claim was originally filed by the family of John R. McCabe Sr., a former U.S. Air Force aircraft technician who claimed to have been exposed to asbestos in engines and other equipment at air force bases during the 1950s. Mr. McCabe died on January 1st, 2023, less than 3 months after he’d filed suit against Raytheon, Northrop Grumman Corp., Koch Industries, and dozens of others he accused of negligence. His claim was continued after his death by his son and daughter.

According to the original complaint, Mr. McCabe’s mesothelioma came after having been exposed to asbestos in several locations, including airbases he worked at from 1953 to 1957, and at Cape Canaveral. His work involved repairing and maintaining engines and other equipment and working on rockets, rocket launchpads, and astronaut support systems. He claimed that he and his coworkers had been misled about product safety and had not been warned of the dangers posed by asbestos.

Mesothelioma Settlement Amounts Not Made Public

The defendants named in the mesothelioma claim included companies at every stop along the asbestos supply chain, from mining and refining companies to those that manufactured and distributed it to Mr. McCabe’s workplace. Each was accused of having negligently contributed to the asbestos exposure that led to his mesothelioma diagnosis and death.

In the space of roughly one year, the companies named in the mesothelioma lawsuit slowly exited the suit, and in late December the Florida judge overseeing the case announced the dismissal of claims against seven of the defendants – Raytheon Technologies Corporation, Rohr Inc., Koch Industries Inc., HLI Solutions Inc., Flint Hills Resources LLC., General Cable Corporation, and Specialty Cable Corporation. No information was disclosed regarding the amount the companies agreed to pay.
