UK Recalls 14 Toys After Asbestos Discovery Raises Mesothelioma Concerns

British safety officials have recalled more than a dozen toys after asbestos contamination had raised urgent mesothelioma concerns for the nation’s children. The cancer-causing mineral has been discovered in sand art kits and other products sold at the country’s major retailers.

Mesothelioma Risk Prompts Urgent Sand Art Kit Recalls Across the UK

The United Kingdom’s Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has issued mesothelioma-related health warnings after finding asbestos contamination in children’s play sand products.  Recently, there has been a wave of products identified as containing asbestos, with Addo Play Limited’s “Out To Impress Sand Art Creations” most recently added to the nationwide recall list. To date, the mesothelioma threat encompasses products sold between August 2023 and February 2026. The concerns echo recent Australian discoveries of asbestos-contaminated children’s sand.

According to OPSS mesothelioma safety warnings, these products “present a risk to health as the sand may be contaminated with a small quantity of asbestos.” Asbestos has been a banned substance in the United Kingdom for years because of the serious health risks it poses, even at low exposure levels. Asbestos is the only known cause of mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer affecting lung and abdominal linings that can develop decades after initial exposure. Children playing with contaminated sand today could face mesothelioma diagnoses in adulthood.

Mesothelioma Prevention Requires Immediate Action from Parents

Parents are rightly concerned, as asbestos exposure risks mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that typically develops 20-50 years after contact with the carcinogen. To avoid that lifelong risk, the OHSS is urging immediate removal of the recalled items and keeping children away from contaminated areas until they can be thoroughly cleaned.

The OPSS also issued detailed mesothelioma safety protocols for handling the recalled products. If the sand remains packaged, parents should place items “in a heavy-duty plastic bag, double tape it securely, label it clearly, and store in a secure location out of the reach of children.” For used sand, parents should “clean up sites where the product was used using wet cloths to avoid generating dust” while wearing gloves and masks.

Asbestos exposure has led to tragedy for centuries, and continues to cause illness and death today. If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with mesothelioma or another asbestos-related disease, you need knowledgeable, compassionate help.
