UK Study Suggests that AI Tool Can Help Diagnose Mesothelioma

A new study from researchers at King’s College in London suggests that an Artificial-Intelligence-based tool called MesoGraph will prove valuable in helping diagnose future cases of malignant mesothelioma. The study’s authors indicate that the tool may also help guide clinicians to more effective treatments for individual patients.

Tool Accurately Distinguishes Between Mesothelioma Subtypes

The study published in the journal Cell Reports Medicine identifies the three forms that malignant mesothelioma can take and the inherent challenge of distinguishing between the different phenotypes found within mesothelioma tumors. Pathologists currently take very thin tissue samples from patients and study the structures of their cells under a microscope to identify their types.

Histopathological images of mesothelioma tissue samples reflect such minute differences in their shapes, that distinguishing between them can be extremely difficult, and mistakes can result in an incorrect diagnosis and inappropriate treatment. To address this, the researchers tested whether MesoGraph, an Artificial Intelligence tool, could more accurately identify each phenotype.

Study Reveals Accuracy of AI Tool in Mesothelioma Cell-Type Differentiation

According to study author and senior lecturer of biomedical AI and data Dr. Heba Sailem, the MesoGraph successfully identified and recognized the various subtypes of mesothelioma that it sampled. Discussing their results, “Such technology not only has the potential to improve patient diagnosis but also can be utilized for targeted evaluation of therapy efficacy.”

The tool allows those using it to see analysis results in a user-friendly interactive graphic interface that views tumors as a network of interacting cells as well as the surrounding environment to characterize the cells being viewed.

This type of technology can significantly impact both the accuracy and speed of diagnosis, facilitating faster and more effective treatment. For more information about innovations impacting mesothelioma patients, contact the Patient Advocates at Mesothelioma.net today at 1-800-692-8608.
