Veteran’s Day May Feel Different for Vets with Mesothelioma

Whether they volunteered or were drafted, and no matter when they served, America’s veterans had a strong sense of the risks they faced — but none of them anticipated that their service would put them at risk for malignant mesothelioma or other asbestos-related diseases. Today is Veteran’s Day – the day the nation set aside to honor those who’ve served in America’s military and show our gratitude for their sacrifice. While we picture battles, we must also be mindful of those veterans who are facing a different kind of war as a result of exposure to toxic materials.

America’s Veterans Represent a Significant Percentage of Mesothelioma Victims

Malignant mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos, and from the mid-1930s through the early 1980s, America’s military used the mineral in hundreds of applications. From the ships that were built in the run-up to World War II and to replace those lost during the attack on Pearl Harbor to the barracks that were built on Army bases across the country, those who served in America’s military between World War II and the Vietnam War were at particular risk of being exposed to the toxic mineral.

Veterans represent approximately one-third of America’s mesothelioma victims, and the reason is clear. Whether they worked in submarines or flew aircraft, military men and women were surrounded by asbestos-containing materials where they slept, where they ate, and where they worked. The material was used in flooring and ceiling tiles, fireproof protective gear, insulation around pipes and brake linings, pumps, valves, and gaskets. Because the material was subject to wear and tear in addition to the hardships of battle, it frequently broke down into microscopic particles that were inhaled and, once inside the body, began forming the scarring of asbestosis and the tumors of lung cancer and mesothelioma.

Veterans With Mesothelioma are Entitled to Special Benefits

In recognition of the fact that many veterans with mesothelioma were exposed to asbestos during their time in the service, the government has established special benefits for these service-related illnesses. Veterans from all branches of the military were exposed, and as long as they meet eligibility requirements, all are entitled to file a veteran’s claim for compensation, medical care, and other benefits. Veterans with mesothelioma may also be able to file personal injury claims against the companies that supplied the asbestos to the government.

If you or someone you love is a veteran who has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, the Patient Advocates at Mesothelioma.net can help you access the compensation you deserve. Contact us today at 1-800-692-8608 to learn more.
