A year after the introduction of vaccinations against COVID-19, patients with cancers like malignant mesothelioma are being warned of the dangers of breakthrough infections. A report published in the Annals of Oncology confirms that these medically fragile patients are extremely susceptible to severe outcomes.
Researchers Cite Vulnerabilities of Those with Mesothelioma
Since the beginning of the global pandemic, physicians have warned those with malignant mesothelioma of the elevated risks that the virus poses to them. Their compromised lungs and weakened immune systems make the already-deadly disease particularly concerning.
Once the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines were developed and became widely available, it was hoped that they would provide sufficient protection for vulnerable populations, including those diagnosed with mesothelioma. These patients were put at the front of the line for vaccinations. But the Delta and Omicron variants have continued to complicate protective efforts, and researchers are finding that patients with cancer who develop symptomatic COVID-19 after vaccination often suffer “severe and lethal” infections.
Though the study reported that risk is highest for patients with blood malignancies, the fact that malignant mesothelioma specifically attacks the lungs makes COVID-19 a potent threat. The researchers found that cancer’s impact on the immune system combined with the effects of chemotherapy or other cancer therapies may also reduce the effectiveness of the vaccines.
Protective Measures Urged for Mesothelioma Patient
For mesothelioma patients and their caretakers, the study’s results are extremely alarming. Of 54 fully vaccinated patients who developed COVID-19, 35 were hospitalized. Ten were admitted to the ICU and 7 died within 30 days. There was no statistical difference in 30-day mortality between fully vaccinated patients and study participants who were unvaccinated.
Because mesothelioma patients apparently remain at high risk for potentially severe adverse outcomes after vaccination, the researchers urge continued implementation of measures to control exposure. Patients and their close contacts should get boosters as they become eligible, continue social distancing practices, and wear masks in public at all times.
