Two months before the 25-year-old star of HBO’s hit drama Euphoria died from an accidental overdose, his beloved 65-year-old father succumbed to malignant pleural mesothelioma. Now Angus Cloud’s mother and sisters have joined the ranks of those seeking compensation from Johnson & Johnson, the company that manufactured and sold the baby powder her husband Joseph had used throughout his life.
Euphoria Star’s Father Died of Malignant Mesothelioma
Joseph Hickey was diagnosed with stage 4 malignant pleural mesothelioma after having used Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder from 1957 through 2023. According to the personal injury lawsuit filed by his widow Lisa Cloud and the couple’s twin daughters Molly and Fiona Hickey, Joseph used the iconic talc-based product after bathing and in his shoes.
Like thousands of others who trace their loved ones’ malignant mesothelioma or ovarian cancer back to the baby powder product, the family has filed suit against the company, accusing them of having been aware of the dangers posed by asbestos contamination. The tragedy of their situation was exacerbated by Angus’ accidental overdose two months after Joseph’s death, just one week after he’d spread his father’s ashes in Ireland.
Mesothelioma Victim’s Family Faces Challenge of J&J Bankruptcy Strategy
The family’s mesothelioma claim is facing the same struggle as those of others whose legal actions have been stalled by Johnson & Johnson’s bankruptcy filing. The company recently offered an $8.9 billion settlement payable to “all current and future talc claims” over 25 years.
Speaking of the situation, the family’s representative said, “They are trying to pay a lot of victims a little bit of money and not allow the claims to be tried on the merits of the case. Under that plan, the victims would only be entitled anywhere between $50,000 and at most $500,000 when your medical expenses and lost wages exceed that.”
