A New Jersey-based medical supply company has issued a recall on 62 cases of asbestos-contaminated baby powder sent to distributors in 12 states, raising concerns over exposure that can lead to malignant mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. The contamination was discovered during a sample testing conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Mesothelioma Concerns Over Asbestos-contaminated Talc Sold on Amazon
While major companies, including Johnson & Johnson, have stopped using talc in their baby powder and body powder products following liabilities for malignant mesothelioma and ovarian cancer, Dynarex has continued selling talc products. According to a news release published by the FDA, the recall follows “a routine sampling program … which revealed that the finished products contained asbestos.” The affected items were distributed on or after March 11th, 2024, in 12 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Washington, and Wisconsin. It was also sold online through Amazon. Affected items were produced under batch number B051.
Asbestos fibers are carcinogenic and, when inhaled, can become embedded in the lungs or their lining, leading to serious and deadly illnesses, including asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma. Long-term exposure to asbestos carries greater risk, but no exposure to asbestos is considered safe.
