In late December, California couple Philip A. Monroe and Frances R. Monroe filed a personal injury lawsuit against multiple asbestos companies that they blame for his diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma. Among those named are Air & Liquid Systems Corporation, Ford Motor Company, Foster Wheeler, John Crane, Inc., Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, and Honeywell International, Inc.

Mesothelioma Victim Accuses Life Insurance Company of Conspiracy
In their mesothelioma lawsuit, Mrs. and Mrs. Monroe note that he served in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1989 and that he also performed home remodeling and automotive repair work from the 1950s to the 1970s. Their claim points to his having been exposed to and inhaled, ingested, or otherwise absorbed large amounts of asbestos fibers from the products he worked with and around that were manufactured, sold, distributed, or installed by the over 50 defendants named in their claim. Their filing indicates that the companies were aware of the dangers posed by the asbestos in their products and failed in their duty of care to warn Mr. Monroe and others about those dangers.
The couple is seeking both compensatory and punitive damages against the companies, arguing that his mesothelioma was a result of their reckless disregard for the harm that their products would cause. They also accuse Metropolitan Life Insurance Company of a conspiracy dating back to the 1920s to hide the results of tests that showed the danger posed to those using asbestos-containing products, including terminating studies being conducted by some scientists.
Wife of Mesothelioma Victim Seeks Additional Compensation for Loss of Consortium
In addition to the claims filed on behalf of Mr. Monroe, the couple is separately seeking compensation for Mrs. Monroe’s loss of her husband’s companionship and support. The case was filed in the Third Circuit Court in Madison County, Illinois.
