Connecticut Couple Files Secondary and Environmental Mesothelioma Lawsuit

A Connecticut couple, Michelle and Louis Tranquillo, has filed a mesothelioma lawsuit that accuses General Electric, Metropolitan Life Insurance, Sporting Goods Property, Inc, and Union Carbide of having caused Mrs. Tranquillo’s fatal illness. The couple’s claim cites both secondary exposure to exposure carried into the home from Mr. Tranquillo’s workplace and environmental exposure to asbestos released into the environment near the couple’s home.

Mesothelioma Claim Cites Product Liability, Recklessness, and Environmental Exposure

Following her diagnosis with malignant mesothelioma, Michelle Tranquillo and her husband Louis have filed a personal injury claim citing Mr. Tranquillo’s workplace exposure to asbestos, as well as the asbestos the companies released into the environment that Mrs. Tranquillo breathed, inhaled, and ingested.

The mesothelioma lawsuit cites the companies’ long-time knowledge that asbestos in its products or environment was unavoidably unsafe and dangerous and that any warnings it provided to employees were inadequate, particularly in light of the defendants having received both medical and scientific data, studies, and reports of asbestos’s dangers as early as 1929. In addition to the growing body of information received by the companies from the 1930s through the 1960s, the suit also notes that the companies had received numerous workers’ compensation claims from former employees that unequivocally made them aware of the dangers that existed.

Environmental Exposure Cited in Mesothelioma Claim

Secondary exposure is frequently blamed for mesothelioma, especially for women, but the Tranquillos’ claim goes beyond that to include environmental exposure, specifically pointing to asbestos released from General Electric’s and Sporting Goods Property’s facilities between 1964 and 1982 into the air, land surface, and/or/ surface water of Bridgeport, Connecticut, where they couple lives.   They say that the companies knew or should have known that this posed serious health hazards to anyone coming into contact with or otherwise exposed to the material, and blame the companies’ carelessness and negligence for Mrs. Tranquillo’s illness.
