Mesothelioma Patients Warned Against Inactivity

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive form of cancer that has devastating effects on the afflicted individual and their loved ones. Though always considered fatal, a variety of innovative treatments offer patients hope for greater survival than was true in the past. But a recent study warns that those who have completed treatment need physical activity to support their survival time.

Study of Cancer Survivors Provides Lessons for Mesothelioma Patients

Though the study published in JAMA Oncology did not specifically target mesothelioma patients, its conclusion provides a cautionary tale of the need to engage in movement every day. The researchers from Alberta Health Services in Calgary, Canada reviewed data from 1,535 cancer survivors who had taken part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007 to 2014. The questionnaire included information about sitting time and leisure-time physical activity.

The takeaway for mesothelioma patients and their caregivers is that cancer survivors who sat for more than 8 hours per day had a fivefold increased risk of overall or cancer-specific mortality compared to those who were active.

Prolonged Sitting and No Activity an Unhealthy Mix for Mesothelioma Patients

The majority of participants had suffered common cancer types including prostate and breast cancer, but the study’s results may apply to those diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma.  These patients are likely to undergo the same type of experience described by its lead author, Lin Yang, PhD, who wrote, “Many cancer survivors experience dramatic life changes that devastatingly affect their physical and psychological health. These impairments may contribute to a sedentary lifestyle and lead to shortened survival.”

The study showed that those who engage in light activity enjoyed a 66% lower risk of all-cause mortality, so mesothelioma patients who push themselves to sit less and move more may realize similar lowered risk. While the study also showed a 68% lower risk of cancer-specific mortality, the nature of mesothelioma may preclude patients from enjoying that same benefit.
