Recall of Asbestos-contaminated Baby Powder Raises Fear of Mesothelioma

A New Jersey-based medical supply company has issued a recall on 62 cases of asbestos-contaminated baby powder sent to distributors in 12 states, raising concerns over exposure that can lead to malignant mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. The contamination was discovered during a sample testing conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Mesothelioma Concerns Over Asbestos-contaminated Talc Sold on Amazon

While major companies, including Johnson & Johnson, have stopped using talc in their baby powder and body powder products following liabilities for malignant mesothelioma and ovarian cancer, Dynarex has continued selling talc products. According to a news release published by the FDA, the recall follows “a routine sampling program … which revealed that the finished products contained asbestos.” The affected items were distributed on or after March 11th, 2024, in 12 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Washington, and Wisconsin. It was also sold online through Amazon. Affected items were produced under batch number B051.

Asbestos fibers are carcinogenic and, when inhaled, can become embedded in the lungs or their lining, leading to serious and deadly illnesses, including asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma. Long-term exposure to asbestos carries greater risk, but no exposure to asbestos is considered safe.

Asbestos Concerns and Mesothelioma Claims Linked to Talc Products

Talc deposits are frequently close to asbestos deposits, and during the mining process, the mineral can easily be contaminated by the material that’s been directly linked to malignant mesothelioma.  Studies have confirmed talc’s role in the rare form of cancer, as well as ovarian cancer in women who used the product for personal hygiene.

Over the last several years, tens of thousands of personal injury claims have been filed against companies that manufactured, distributed, and sold talc-based consumer products by people diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma and ovarian cancer. With billions of dollars in damages awarded to victims and countless cases yet to be filed, most companies that sell talc-based products have replaced the mineral with cornstarch.

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with mesothelioma or another asbestos-related disease and you believe your exposure came from contaminated talc, the Patient Advocates at Mesothelioma.net can help. Contact us today at 1-800-692-8608 to learn more.
