In 2023, Richard Long was diagnosed with biphasic pleural mesothelioma after having spent years working at the Dillingham ship repair yard on Swan Island, north of Portland, Oregon. He filed a personal injury lawsuit against more than fifty companies that he accused of negligently exposing him to asbestos. This week, a Portland jury hearing his case ordered gasket manufacturer John Crane, Inc. to pay him $34.2 million in damages.

Mesothelioma Victim Spent Ten Years Working at Portland Shipyard
From 1972 to 1985, the mesothelioma victim worked at a ship repair yard located on Swan Island, just north of Portland, Oregon. His job responsibilities included helping machinists and other tradesmen in the engine rooms of commercial vessels; these locations held equipment that was insulated with or made from asbestos-containing materials.
At the time that Mr. Long worked at the shipyard, the public was unaware that asbestos could cause mesothelioma, but the companies that provided the material had been notified of its dangers and chose to keep the information secret. As a result, many have been accused of negligence. John Crane, Inc. is one of the most notorious asbestos companies and has faced thousands of claimants blaming its packing materials and gaskets for their deadly and disabling illnesses.
Jury’s Mesothelioma Verdict Sends a Message About Corporate Responsibility
Before handing down its verdict, the jury heard testimony about internal company documents and safety data sheets showing that John Crane had known that their products could cause mesothelioma but chose not to share the information with workers like Mr. Long. The large sum they have ordered the company to pay in compensation to the 71-year-old victim makes clear that the public has no tolerance for companies that fail to uphold their duty to warn of product hazards.
Speaking for Mr. Long and his family, a representative said, “The jury’s verdict reinforces the fundamental principle that companies must warn of their product’s hazards. Rick was enjoying his retirement as the ultimate outdoorsman with his partner, Peggy. John Crane’s corporate decisions deprived him of that life.”
