Johnson & Johnson is one of the largest healthcare and pharmaceutical companies in the world. Still, its position has not stopped mesothelioma victims from blaming it for causing their deadly illnesses. The organization is currently facing the family of a 66-year-old wife and mother who died of the rare asbestos-related disease after a lifetime of using the company’s iconic baby powder product.

Mesothelioma Victim’s Family Says J&J Failed to Warn
A Suffolk County, Massachusetts jury is hearing evidence in the case of Winifred “Missy” Haddad, who died in late 2020. According to her family, Mrs. Haddad used Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder religiously as a personal hygiene staple throughout her life. Their lawsuit accuses the talc powder of having been contaminated with asbestos and the company of failing to warn Mrs. Haddad and other consumers of the dangers hidden in the product.
Mesothelioma has long been categorized as an occupational disease, but recent claims have pointed to asbestos-contaminated talc in consumer products as the source of victims’ exposure. Talc deposits are frequently located next to asbestos deposits, and this has been found to cause cross-contamination during the mining process. When this talc has been included in body powders, cosmetics, and other products, the fine asbestos particles hidden within are easily inhaled and, once introduced to the pleural lining of the thoracic cavity, cause cell death, mutation, and the formation of mesothelioma tumors.
Mesothelioma Cases Stand Apart from the Talc Settlement
While Johnson & Johnson continues to defend itself against individual mesothelioma claims like that filed by the Haddads, the company is also facing tens of thousands of claims that are proceeding on a separate track. People who blame the powder for their ovarian cancer are currently negotiating a massive settlement with the company that, if agreed to, is estimated to be valued at $5.8 billion.
