Facing thousands of ovarian cancer lawsuits and additional filings by mesothelioma victims, consumer giant Johnson & Johnson has announced it will pay $5.5 billion to approximately 69,000 of those blaming its baby powder and other talc products for their ovarian cancer. The landmark settlement closes a decade-long chapter of contentious litigation that saw three failed bankruptcy attempts and juries awarding billions of dollars to victims.
After Years of Bankruptcy Attempts, Ovarian Cancer Victims Win $5.5 Billion
Ovarian cancer victims allege that Johnson & Johnson’s talc products were contaminated with asbestos and caused their ovarian cancer. After years of fighting the company’s multiple bankruptcy filings, victims’ representatives are calling the $5.5 billion settlement a good resolution.
Though Johnson & Johnson has deployed significant legal strategies to escape liability, both mesothelioma and ovarian cancer litigation against the company has produced some of the largest talc-related verdicts in American legal history. A Baltimore jury awarded $1.5 billion to a single mesothelioma victim in December 2025, a Los Angeles jury awarded $966 million in a mesothelioma wrongful death case before it was reduced to $16 million, and the first Los Angeles bellwether trial delivered $40 million to an ovarian cancer victim.
A $32 million mesothelioma verdict followed in June 2026, and an Illinois appeals court recently upheld a $45 million mesothelioma verdict. Each jury concluded that J&J’s talc products caused cancer in consumers who’d trusted the company’s promises of purity.
Mesothelioma Litigation Against Johnson & Johnson Continues
Despite the $5.5 billion resolution, J&J’s vice president of litigation insists that both the mesothelioma claims and ovarian cancer claims were “meritless,” and that the company settled only to “get closure” and move forward. Critically for those diagnosed with mesothelioma, the agreement only applies to the existing ovarian cancer claims that were previously consolidated in the federal litigation. It does not address future lawsuits, meaning those with mesothelioma diagnoses linked to talc exposure will still need to pursue their claims through the court system.
The ovarian cancer settlement is awaiting approval from the federal judge who’s been overseeing the multidistrict litigation. Once that happens, payments can begin reaching tens of thousands of ovarian cancer victims and their families who’ve spent years fighting for justice.
