Talc Now Cited in 4 in 10 Mesothelioma Lawsuits

In a recently published report, the highly respected Washington D.C. consultancy KCIC revealed that talc exposure was cited in 4 out of 10 mesothelioma lawsuits filed in 2025. This represents a significant increase and radical shift in asbestos disease litigation — talc was cited in just 1 in 6 claims in 2021. In a related finding, the study also disclosed that the rare asbestos-related cancer is striking younger victims and far more women than in previous years.

Younger, Female Mesothelioma Victims Connect Illness to Talc in Baby Powder

For years, KCIC has tracked U.S. asbestos and mesothelioma filings. The firm’s annual Asbestos Litigation Year in Review is considered among the most comprehensive snapshots of litigation trends, and its 2025 edition found that talc-only mesothelioma filings grew 47% in 2025. This is more than eight times faster than traditional asbestos filings over the same period. In cases where talc is the only exposure named, 57% of victims are women, up from just 7% in 2019.

This marked shift in victim demographics related to talc is also evident in mesothelioma victim age. The average age of traditional victims filing claims is 74, but when the stated cause of the diseases is talc exposure, the average age drops to just 67. The youngest plaintiff in all of 2025 asbestos litigation was 23 years old and alleged only talc exposure, specifically having used cosmetic talc products for years or decades before their diagnosis. Women now make up 38% of all plaintiffs whose claims involve a talc allegation. This is more than twice the female share of all plaintiffs citing all asbestos exposures.

Mesothelioma Verdicts Reach Historic Levels

Juries are responding to evidence of talc’s role in mesothelioma by awarding victims some of the largest verdicts in asbestos litigation history. In December 2025, a Baltimore jury awarded more than $1.5 billion to a single peritoneal mesothelioma victim. While this was the largest talc-related verdict for a single victim in 15 years of litigation, other talc verdicts have included nearly $1 billion for a California wrongful death case, $65.5 million for a Minnesota mesothelioma victim, $42 million for a Massachusetts mesothelioma patient and his wife, and $24.4 million for the family of an Avon worker whose mesothelioma was linked to exposure to industrial talc.

According to the KCIC report, over the last five years, mesothelioma victims have been awarded compensation in roughly 90% of talc-related asbestos trials, a fact that is in part due to the presentation of internal corporate documents showing that talc product companies knew talc’s dangers but continued marketing their products as pure and safe. Still, most talc cases are settled out of court, with Johnson & Johnson reporting that it settles roughly 95% of mesothelioma cases filed against it.
