Christine L. Lau, MD
Dr. Christine Lau is a thoracic surgeon and the Chief of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, as well as the chief of surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center.[1] She is a nationally renowned thoracic and lung transplant surgeon who has significant experience in treating patients with thoracic illnesses and injuries of all kinds, including malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer.
Education and Career
Dr. Lau earned her medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School. She completed an internship and residency in General Surgery at Duke University Medical Center and then went to Washington University in St Louis to complete fellowships in cardiothoracic surgery and lung transplantation. Dr. Lau also earned an MBA from UVA’s Darden School of Business with a focus on management and leadership development.[1]
After completing her medical education and training, Dr. Lau served as an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Michigan School of Medicine in Ann Arbor, Michigan before accepting her role at the University of Virginia, where she helped build the lung transplant program to be among the best in the nation for patient outcomes and was named the George Minor Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery.[1]
Professional Activities and Memberships
Dr. Lau serves as director of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and serves on the Board for the American Association for Thoracic Surgeons. She is also on the expert panel for Leap Frog, which collects and reports on hospital performance, and on the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Study Section for Anesthesiology and Trauma Research.[1]

Research
Dr. Lau’s research focuses on the use of Regadenoson (an adenosine 2A receptor agonist) for use in human lung transplantation and is the recipient of a $3.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to investigate its use. She also studies lung cancer screening, lung injury and inflammation, transtracheal oxygen, scoop catheter, photodynamic therapy, endoscopic bronchial ultrasound, endobronchial ultrasound bronchoscopy, and thoracic surgery.[1]
She has authored or co-authored more than 140 articles in leading publications including the Journal of Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery, Annals of Thoracic Surgery, and the American Journal of Transplantation. She has also written or contributed chapters to 35 medical textbooks on her specialty interests.[1]
