Gerard A. Silvestri, MD, MS
Dr. Gerard Silvestri is a lung cancer pulmonologist at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and its affiliated Hollings Cancer Center. He specializes in lung cancers of all types, starting with evaluating each patient’s individual disease characteristics and then managing their condition to improve outcomes.[1]
His dedication to the care of lung cancer patients has extended to him being sought after for evaluation of new technologies for its treatment: he was part of the first group to publish on the use of endoscopic ultrasound with fine needle aspiration of mediastinal lymph nodes to stage lung cancer patients. Dr. Silvestri evaluates between five and seven new lung cancer patients each week.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Silvestri completed his undergraduate education at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey. He pursued and earned his medical degree at St. George’s University School of Medicine, and then went on to an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Hospital of St. Raphael’s/Yale University School of Medicine. He completed a fellowship in Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock/Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital and also has an advanced degree from Dartmouth in Health Services Research.[1]
Dr. Silvestri is highly sought after for consultation regarding lung cancer diagnoses. He is credited with having established the first multidisciplinary lung cancer clinic in the state of South Carolina. He is the George C. and Margaret M. Hillenbrand Endowed Chair and Professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Dr. Silvestri has been a section editor and author of the American College of Chest Physicians evidence-based guidelines on the diagnosis and management of lung cancer, and has over 200 peer-reviewed journal publications, abstracts, book chapters, and invited commentaries in clinical care and research of lung cancer himself. He is a frequent invited speaker on lung cancer at national and international conferences and has lectured as a master clinician in lung cancer for both the American College of Chest Physicians and the American Thoracic Society. He has also served as chair of the Thoracic Oncology Network.[1]
Research
Dr. Silvestri’s clinical research centers on every aspect of care for patients with lung cancer. His funded research includes clinical trials and studies focused on the evaluation and management of screen-detected abnormalities, the ability to predict malignancy from a radiographically detected nodule, and the health policy implications of mass lung cancer screening programs.[2]
