James D. Maloney, MD
Dr. James D. Maloney is a general thoracic and oncologic surgeon who specializes in the treatment of lung cancer at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin. Dr. Maloney’s skills include minimally invasive surgical techniques, including thoracoscopic lobectomy, lung volume reduction surgery, bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, and video-assisted thoracoscopy (VATS). He also performs lung transplants. Dr. Maloney is board-certified in Surgery and Thoracic Surgery and spends a significant amount of his time caring for veterans.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Maloney attended medical school at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, then went on to complete his internship and residency in General Surgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He also completed a residency in Thoracic Surgery at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
In addition to his role as a faculty member in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and as Section Chief of Thoracic Surgery at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics, Dr. Maloney also serves as the Chief of Transplant Surgery Services at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Administration Hospital, the Director of Adult ECMO Services at UW Health, and Chief of the Section of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Middleton Memorial Veterans Administration Hospital. He is a member of numerous VA Hospital committees, including the Veterans Administration Thoracic Transplant Board, the Veterans Administration Transplant Surgery Advisory Board, and the VA Hospital Invasive Procedure and Blood Usage Review.[1]
Research
Dr. Maloney’s research interests include restoring function following chest surgery, aging, and cancer. He is also actively involved in research into novel treatments for end-stage lung disease, lung cancer and lung transplant patient outcomes, informatics in specialty care, and the treatment of emphysema.
