Malcolm DeCamp, MD, FACS
Dr. Malcolm DeCamp is the K. Craig Kent Chair in Strategic Leadership and Professor of Surgery and Chair of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison, Wisconsin. A cardiothoracic oncologic surgeon, he focuses his considerable expertise and skill on thoracic oncology and the care of patients with lung and esophageal cancers. His practice includes the care of patients with advanced lung diseases requiring lung transplantation and lung volume reduction surgery, as well as patients with mesothelioma, chest wall tumors, thymoma, and thymic malignancies.[1]
Dr. DeCamp’s surgical expertise covers a wide range of techniques and procedures, including pleurectomy and decortication, extrapleural pneumonectomy, bronchoscopy, thoracoscopic talc pleurodesis, and more.[2]
Education and Career
Dr. DeCamp attended medical school at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, graduating summa cum laude. He completed his General Surgery, Cardiovascular Surgery, and Thoracic Surgical training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where he also served as an American Cancer Society Clinical Fellow.[1]
Following completion of his education and training, he was Chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the Fowler McCormick Professor of Surgery and Professor of Pulmonary Medicine at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University.
Professional Memberships and Activities
Dr. DeCamp is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Chest Physicians. He is a member of the American Surgical Association, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, and is a Director of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He also serves as a scientific advisor to the American Lung Association and is an active participant and leader in the NCI-sponsored cooperative oncology process and served on the steering committee of the NHLBI/CMS-sponsored National Emphysema Treatment Trial from 1999 to 2013.[1]
Research
Dr. DeCamp’s research is focused on improving care and outcomes for patients diagnosed with lung cancer, malignant pleural mesothelioma, esophageal cancer, and other thoracic malignancies. He is actively involved in clinical trials that evaluate risk assessment and reduction of risk for pulmonary resection; identification of biomarkers predictive of outcome following lung resection for cancer; novel approaches in immunotherapy and targeted cancer therapies to determine the risks and rewards for individualized patient care.[1]
