Melinda Hsu, MD
Dr. Melinda Hsu is a thoracic medical oncologist at University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. She specializes in the care of patients with lung cancer, as well as other thoracic malignancies including malignant pleural mesothelioma.[1]
Dr. Hsu’s primary objective is to optimize the care of patients who are long-term survivors of lung cancer. Both of her parents faced non-small cell lung cancer diagnoses, and she points to their experiences as the driving force in her pursuit of a career in thoracic oncology.[2]
Education and Career
Dr. Hsu earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Harvard University and followed that achievement by earning a Master of Science degree in Physiology and Complementary and Alternative Medicine at Georgetown University. She then went on to earn her medical degree at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Indiana University Hospital, where she was named Chief Resident. She completed her educational journey with a fellowship in Medical Oncology at Johns Hopkins Hospital before joining University Hospitals and Seidman Cancer Center as an Assistant Professor of Hematology and Oncology and a member of the Population and Cancer Prevention Program at Case Comprehensive Cancer Center.[1]
Research
Dr. Hsu’s research interest lies in the functional aspects of survivorship. Psychosocial impact, cognitive dysfunction, and physical function all fascinate her and have driven her studies. Following her final fellowship project, she is using data to inform interventions to address the long-term needs of survivors of lung cancer emphasizing the enrollment of racial and socio-demographical underserved populations.
