Walker A. Julliard, MD
Dr. Walker A. Julliard is a cardiothoracic surgeon with specific expertise in the surgical treatment of non-cardiac diseases of the chest, including lung cancer and malignant pleural mesothelioma. He practices at Virginia Commonwealth University Health and the Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center and is particularly skilled in minimally invasive surgeries including thoracoscopy, robotic surgery, and laparoscopic techniques, as well as traditional open techniques and endoscopic non-surgical approaches.[1]
Dr. Julliard is an integral member of the Hume-Lee Transplant Center at VCU Health and is excited at the prospect of using advanced science and technology to advance health care for patients diagnosed with lung cancer.
Education and Career
Dr. Walker Julliard began his educational journey at the University of Oregon, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He then completed medical school at the University of Rochester and an internship and residency in General Surgery at the University of Wisconsin. Following this training, he completed a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Virginia.[1]

Dr. Julliard is a member of the Richmond Academy of Medicine, the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network, and The Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
Research
Dr. Julliard’s research interests involve investigating how the immune system adapts based on environmental factors, and the impact that these factors can have on cancer formation and transplant rejection. His goal is to find ways to alter the immune system to help it better adapt to and accept lung transplants while still combatting lung cancer.[1]
