Chi-Fu Jeffrey Yang, MD
Dr. Chi-Fu Jeffrey Yang is a thoracic surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, and an assistant professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School. He specializes in minimally invasive surgical techniques for the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma, lung cancer, and other thoracic diseases. He has received numerous awards for his excellence in both clinical care and teaching.[1]
Dr. Yang’s clinical interests include the use of video-assisted thoracic surgery and other minimally invasive techniques in the treatment of chest wall tumors and reconstruction, lung nodules and ground glass opacities, thymoma, esophageal cancer, malignant pleural mesothelioma, sarcomas, and all types of lung cancers.
Education and Career
Dr. Yang earned a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from Harvard College before earning his medical degree at Harvard Medical School. He then completed an internship and residency in General Surgery at Duke University Hospital and a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stanford.[1]
Professional Memberships and Activities
Dr. Yang serves as the Vice Chair of the Alliance Thoracic Surgery Group and is an editorial board member of the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, the Journal of Thoracic Diseases, and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Online Curriculum. He is also an associate editor for Pearson’s General Thoracic Surgery.[1]
Dr. Yang’s interest in raising awareness of lung cancer screening spurred him to start the American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that has worked with communities across the country to highlight the importance of lung cancer screening. In 2021, he received the Harvard Medical School Dean’s Community Service Faculty Award in recognition of these efforts.[1]
Research
In addition to his surgical practice, Dr. Yang conducts clinical research and is the co-principal investigator and project leader of an NIH R01-funded study evaluating postoperative complications and recovery in cardiothoracic patients. He has been the lead or senior author on several high-impact papers published in the British Medical Journal, Journal of Clinical Oncology, JAMA Oncology, Lancet Respiratory Medicine, Journal of Thoracic Oncology, Annals of Surgery, and Chest. He has written over 120 publications, including over 60 as first-, co-first, or senior author.[1]
