Erin A. Gillaspie, M.D., MPH
Dr. Erin A. Gillaspie is a thoracic surgeon. She is the Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, where she provides advanced surgical treatment for patients diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma, lung cancer, and other thoracic malignancies.
Inspired to become a thoracic surgeon by her own grandfather’s diagnosis of malignant pleural mesothelioma, Dr. Gillaspie is inspired by her patients and passionate about the use of robotic thoracic surgical techniques to improve patient outcomes.
Education and Career
Dr. Gillaspie received her undergraduate degree from the University of Florida in Gainesville, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science. She earned her medical degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami and then completed an internship and residency in General Surgery at the Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, New York. She completed a fellowship in Thoracic Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and later completed a Master’s degree in Public Health at Vanderbilt University.
After completing her medical education and training, Dr. Gillaspie accepted a position with Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she was an Assistant Professor of Thoracic Surgery. While there, she built and served as the Head of the Thoracic Surgical Robotics Program and served as a steering committee member of the Vanderbilt Institute for Surgery and Engineering.
Dr. Gillaspie is a member of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network and the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
Research
Dr. Gillaspie’s research focus is on lung cancer and the multidisciplinary management of both early and advanced stages of disease. She works with other investigators to develop prediction models for treatment with immunotherapy. She also participates in the development of novel technologies for minimally invasive approaches to surgery and robotic surgery.
