Hugh Auchincloss, MD, MPH
Dr. Hugh Auchincloss is a thoracic surgeon who practices at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He also sees patients at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, Massachusetts. Dr. Auchincloss uses minimally invasive and robotic approaches to treat patients diagnosed with lung cancer, esophageal cancer, malignant pleural mesothelioma, esophageal cancer, gastroesophageal reflux, and tumors of the mediastinum.[1]
His other clinical interests include achalasia, hyperhidrosis, paraesophageal hernias, thymoma, surgical treatment of myasthenia gravis, and GERD.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Auchincloss earned his medical degree at Harvard Medical School and then completed an internship and residencies in General Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. He also completed a master’s in public health degree in Clinical Effectiveness at the T.H. Chan Harvard School of Public Health.[1]

Dr. Auchincloss is a member of several professional medical organizations, including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Association for Academic Surgery, the General Thoracic Surgery Club, and the American College of Surgeons.[2]
Research
Dr. Auchincloss leads the Auchincloss Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital, which uses institutional data combined with large national and international databases to answer questions about the treatment and prognosis of lung cancer and other thoracic diseases like malignant pleural mesothelioma. He is currently investigating trends in lung resection for patients with small-cell lung cancer, recurrence patterns for patients with resected carcinoid tumors, and early predictors of the need for tracheostomy in cardiac surgery patients.[2]
