Mark L. Knab, MD
Dr. Mark L. Knab is a surgical oncologist who specializes in abdominal cancer surgeries at Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center in Maywood, Illinois, and Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village. He has a special interest in cancers of the GI tract involving anywhere from the esophagus to the stomach, pancreas, liver, gall bladder, and intestines, as well as peritoneal surface malignancies, including peritoneal mesothelioma.[1]
Dr. Knab has deep knowledge and skill in the use of complex surgical techniques, including the innovative protocol that combines cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This approach has proven extremely beneficial for patients with peritoneal mesothelioma.
Dr. Knab’s approach to patient care starts with an understanding of how frightening a cancer diagnosis is. From that foundation, he works to provide as much information as possible about the technical, surgical, and medical aspects of their diagnosis and treatment plan.[1]
Research
Dr. Knab’s research focuses on the surgical management of advanced abdominal and gastrointestinal cancer. He has written numerous articles and book chapters and has presented at regional and national medical conferences. He is an active member of several professional societies, including the Society of Surgical Oncology and the American College of Surgeons.[2]

Background Liver tumors are commonly encountered in oncology. The study aimed to assess the impact of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) (MRgSBRT) on disease-related outcomes and the toxicity profile. Methods Patients who received MRgSBRT from 2019 to 2021 for primary and metastatic liver tumors were…

Real-Time Online Adaptive Magnetic Resonance Image Guided Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy with or without Elective Nodal Irradiation for Inoperable Pancreas Cancer Patients. Article. Nov 2022. T.R. Abdelrhman, N.H. Darwish, K. Gomez[…], W. Small. Purpose/Objective(s) Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) to patients with inoperable pancreas cancer has shown promising outcomes. Dose escalated SBRT is usually challenging given the associated risks to nearby organs. This study aims to report treatment outcomes and adverse events of Real-time Online Adaptive Magnetic Resonance-Guided SBRT…
The impact of immunonutrition on pancreaticoduodenectomy outcomes. Article. Jul 2022. Xuanji Wang, Michael Littau, Joseph Fahmy[…], Gerard Abood. Background: Malnutrition is a significant risk factor for decreased survival in cancer patients undergoing a pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). Our study aims to investigate the impact of immunonutrition on length of stay (LOS), infection rates, postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF), and delayed gastric emptying (DGE). Study Design: This study retrosp…
Impact of sociodemographic factors on outcomes in patients with peritoneal malignancies following cytoreduction and chemoperfusion. Article. Full-text available. Mar 2022. Adriana Cantos, Emanuel Eguia, Xuanji Wang[…], Lawrence M. Knab. Background and objectives: Sociodemographic factors have been shown to impact surgical outcomes. However, the effects of these factors on patients undergoing cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) are not well known. This study aims to evaluate the impact of sociodemographic factors on patients undergoing CRS/H…
