Robert Barone, MD
Dr. Robert Barone is a surgical oncologist who specializes in the treatment of primary and complex cancers, including malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. He is the Director of Surgical Oncology Services at Sharp Healthcare and a founding member and Staff Surgical Oncologist at Oncology Associates of San Diego, where he performs cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for patients diagnosed with malignant peritoneal mesothelioma, GI tract tumors, ovarian, colorectal, and appendiceal cancers.[1]
Dr. Barone is widely recognized as one of the first surgeons on the West Coast of the United States to perform this complex, groundbreaking surgery. He is also credited with having developed the implantable liver infusion pump and implantable venous access devices.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Barone earned his medical degree at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He completed his General Surgery internship and residency and a Surgical Oncology fellowship at the University of Illinois Hospitals in Chicago, Illinois and an additional fellowship at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
Dr. Barone is a founding member of Oncology Associates of San Diego and Comprehensive Breast Care Center of San Diego Director of Surgical Oncology Services at Sharp Healthcare and Voluntary Professor of Surgery at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine.[1]
His previous experiences include roles at the University of Illinois College of Medicine and the West Side Veterans Administration Hospital in Chicago, Illinois; Chief of the Tumor Clinic at the Naval Regional Medical Center and attending surgeon at Merritt Hospital in Oakland, California; and Staff Surgeon at the San Diego Tumor Institute, Chief of Surgical Oncology of the Veterans Administration Hospital, and Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at UCSD School of Medicine in San Diego, California. Dr. Barone also served as an Active Duty U.S. Navy Commander and a Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve.[2]

Research
Dr. Barone has a decades-long record of groundbreaking research and discovery, including the development of the hepatic infusion pump for the delivery of chemotherapy directly into the liver and the Port-a-Cath implantable port for the delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs intravenously, intra-arterially, and intraperitoneally. A past principal investigator of NIH grants, he continues to conduct clinical trials investigating outcomes in cytoreductive surgery for GI tract tumors, ovarian, colorectal, appendiceal, and peritoneal surface malignancies combined with intraoperative and immediate postoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy.[1]
