Timothy S. Blackwell, MD
Dr. Timothy S. Blackwell is a pulmonologist and critical care medicine specialist who is the chair of the University of Michigan’s Department of Internal Medicine. He is also the John G. Searle Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan’s Medical School. Dr. Blackwell is nationally recognized for his contributions to the clinical care of patients diagnosed with lung cancer and other pulmonary diseases, as well as for his mentoring of researchers and physician-scientists.[2]
Education and Career
Dr. Blackwell earned his undergraduate degree in Molecular Biology from Vanderbilt University and his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis and completed a pulmonary and critical care fellowship at Vanderbilt.[1]
After completing his fellowship, Dr. Blackwell joined the staff at Vanderbilt University Hospital. Over the years his responsibilities expanded with his achievements until he rose to the position of physician-in-chief of the Vanderbilt Lung Institute and director of the Center for Lung Research. He was also named director of the Division of Allergy, Pulmonary, and Critical Care Medicine. He is credited with the expansion of the division, as well as with launching the Vanderbilt Lung Institute to seamlessly interconnect patient care delivery in Pulmonary Medicine, Allergy, and Immunology with Thoracic Surgery.[1]
Professional Memberships and Activities
Dr. Blackwell is an active member of several professional medical organizations and participates in numerous professional activities. Among these, he is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and he chaired the Lung Injury, Repair, and Remodeling Study Section of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute where he is a member of the Board of External Experts.[1]
Research
Dr. Blackwell is dedicated to investigating the pathobiology of lung diseases, including interstitial lung diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), acute lung injury, and lung cancer. He uses basic and translational science approaches and has authored nearly 300 peer-reviewed papers, as well as four book chapters.[1]
