Toby Campbell, MD
Dr. Toby Campbell is a thoracic medical oncologist in the division of Hematology, Oncology, and Palliative Care at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin. He specializes in treating patients with lung cancer and serves as the Chief of Palliative Care Medicine, working to ensure that those with serious malignancies and diseases deserve special care and attention.[1]
In his role, he collaborates with a multidisciplinary team of specialists to provide comprehensive care treatment, including other oncologists, surgeons, and radiation oncologists as well as palliative care providers, nutritionists, and social workers.
Education and Career
Dr. Campbell earned both his undergraduate degree and his medical degree at the University of Virginia, then completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Wisconsin. He then completed fellowships in Medical Oncology and Palliative Medicine at Northwestern University, where he also received a master’s degree in Clinical Investigation.[2]
Since joining the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Campbell has been named Professor of Medicine, Chief of Palliative Care, and the Ellen and Peter O. Johnson Chair in Palliative Care. He served as the HPM Fellowship Program Director from 2010 to 2017 and developed the program into a national program of excellence, and the University of Wisconsin Palliative Care Program won both a Citation of Honor from the American Hospital Association’s Circle of Life program and a Citation of Honor from the Patient and Family-Centered Care Award from the Society of Critical Care Medicine.[2]

Dr. Campbell is an active member of several medical and professional organizations, including:
- American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO)
- American Association of Hospice and Palliative Medicine
He volunteers for ASCO’s supportive care guidelines committee and has authored guidelines on chronic pain in survivors, dyspnea, and communication. He is also a panel member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network for palliative care and co-chair of the NCCN Palliative Care Framework subcommittee.[2]
Research
As a national leader in palliative care, Dr. Campbell’s research interests focus on high-risk shared decision-making, communication education, empathy, and models of care for palliative care implementation. His investigative targets include lung cancer therapeutics, chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, and system management,[] and his work has been published in JAMA, JAMA Surgery, Annals of Surgery, Intensive Care Medicine, Patient Education and Counseling, Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, and Journal of Oncology Practice, with a total authorship of more than forty professional publications in addition to presentations and book chapters. He has also received many awards for his research, including the Sojourns Scholar Leadership Award from the Cambia Foundation and the Young Investigator Awards from both the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer.[2]
