Patrick Forde, M.B.B.Ch.
Dr. Forde is a medical oncologist and researcher specializing in thoracic cancers like mesothelioma, and researching the impact of immunotherapy in the treatment of lung cancer and mesothelioma. He currently divides his time between Johns Hopkins University and Trinity College Dublin.
Education and Career
Dr. Forde’s medical education began in Ireland, where he earned his medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons. He continued to a residency in internal medicine at the Royal College of Physicians, followed by multiple medical oncology residencies and fellowships.
After completing a fellowship in oncology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, he became an Associate Professor of Oncology at Johns Hopkins Medicine.[1]
Dr. Forde was recently the Co-Director of the Division of Upper Aerodigestive Malignancies in the Department of Oncology at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center. There, he treated patients with lung cancer, mesothelioma, and other thoracic cancers.
Dr. Forde is now a Professor of Oncology at Johns Hopkins University and Predergast Professor of Immuno-Oncology at Trinity College Dublin. He is also a Consultant Medical Oncologist at St. James Hospital Dublin.[2]
Research Interests
Dr. Forde’s research has led to numerous advances in the treatment of pleural mesothelioma, including FDA approval of neoadjuvant chemo-immunotherapy for the treatment of surgically operable lung cancer.
He was the principal investigator for the thoracic cancer immunobiology biospecimen repository protocol at Johns Hopkins and has led the development of a clinical-translational research program focused on the impact of immune-oncology on upper aerodigestive malignancies.[1]
Dr. Forde was the principal investigator for a landmark phase III trial that led to the FDA approval of nivolumab and chemotherapy for treating lung cancer. He has also done important work in showing how these and other therapies improve patient survival times.
