Farid Gharagozloo, MD, FACS, FCCS, FACHE
Dr. Farid Gharagozloo is a thoracic surgeon and a leading expert in minimally invasive robotic thoracic surgery. He specializes in treating thoracic cancers, like lung cancer and pleural mesothelioma, as well as benign esophageal conditions. His career is distinguished by having been the first in the world to perform robot-assisted extrapleural pneumonectomies.
Education and Career
Dr. Gharagozloo began his education at Johns Hopkins University, where he earned his undergraduate degree, followed by his medical degree at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
He completed his internship and residency in Surgery at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota, and also pursued a fellowship in Cardiac Surgery Research at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School.[1]
Dr. Gharagozloo has had a distinguished career, serving as Professor and Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at George Washington University Medical Center and as Professor and Surgeon-in-Chief of that facility’s Washington Institute of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery; as Professor and Chief of Thoracic Surgery at the University of Arizona Medical Center, where he performed the world’s first and second robot-assisted extrapleural pneumonectomy for the treatment of malignant mesothelioma.
He was also Surgeon-in-Chief and Professor of Surgery at the Center for Advanced Thoracic and Esophageal Surgery at Florida Hospital Celebration Health and the University of Central Florida. He also served as the Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Global Robotics Institute.
Dr. Gharagozloo is now the Surgeon-in-Chief for the Institute for Advanced Thoracic Surgery and a professor of surgery at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine.[2]
He is dedicated to using robotics to perform better and safer oncologic operations, which reduce blood loss, shorten hospital stays, and lower the risk of infection and death.
Dr. Gharagozloo is the Senior Editor of the Textbook of Robotic Surgery, which was published in 2021. He is also the author of 234 peer-reviewed publications and 35 book chapters. He holds U.S. and European patents for a revolutionary tissue healing accelerant.
