Stephen Liu, MD
Dr. Stephen Liu’s clinical practice focuses on thoracic malignancies, including lung cancer, thymic malignancies, and pleural cancers including malignant pleural mesothelioma. He has significant expertise in the development of novel therapeutic agents and in combining treatment protocols with the goal of improving patient outcomes. Dr. Liu’s philosophy of care is in alignment with the mission of MedStar Georgetown University Hospital: to care for the whole person. He works to be an advocate for his patients, and believes in combining open communication with the most advanced care available.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Liu graduated cum laude from Johns Hopkins University with a major in Biology and a minor in Film and Media Studies. He went on to earn his medical degree at the University of Maryland and then completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He followed this experience with a dual fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at the University of Southern California, then received specialized training as a Drug Development Scholar in Genomic Medicine at the Translational Genomics Research Institute in Phoenix, Arizona.[1]
Dr. Liu spent two years as an Assistant Professor at USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, then moved on to Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, where he has been part of the Thoracic Oncology section and the Experimental Therapeutics Program since 2013. Today he is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Georgetown School of Medicine and the Director of Developmental Therapeutics and the Director of Thoracic Oncology at the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. He is also actively involved in post-graduate education and is the co-host for the official International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer podcast, Lung Cancer Considered.
Research
Dr. Liu focuses his research on developing novel therapeutic agents and identifying innovative combinations that will improve outcomes for those with malignant mesothelioma and other advanced thoracic malignancies. He has led numerous national and global clinical trials for the treatment of lung cancer and has been published in a wide range of highly respected medical journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Journal of Thoracic Oncology, Lancet Oncology, Cancer Discovery, and Clinical Cancer Research.[1]
