M. Chris Dobelbower, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. M. Chris Dobelbower is a radiation oncologist and professor at the Heersink School of Medicine and the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His clinical interest centers on the treatment of thoracic malignancies including lung cancer and pleural mesothelioma, and UAB’s radiation oncology department provides him with all the tools he needs to offer advanced treatment techniques.[1] Protocols available include triggered imaging radiosurgery; medical dosimetry; three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy; brachytherapy; external beam radiation therapy; image-guided radiotherapy; intensity-modulated radiation therapy; radioisotope therapy; and stereotactic body radiation therapy.
Education and Career
Dr. Dobelbower’s undergraduate degree was earned at Ohio State University, from which he also earned a Master of Science degree and a Ph.D. He earned his medical degree at the Medical College of Ohio, completed his internship at Mercy St Vincent Medical Center/Mercy Health Partners, and then completed his residency in Radiation Oncology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he served as Chief Resident.[1]
Research
Dr. Dobelbower’s research interests include the treatment of thoracic malignancies, including thoracic radiosurgery using fiducial-guided Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy, (SBRT), adaptive radiation, and proton therapy.[2] He is also interested in radiation applications for lung cancer, breast cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, genitourinary cancer, head and neck cancers, and sarcomas.[1]
The clinical trial he is currently engaged in is:
EXTRAMURAL UAB GRANT OR CONTRACT: UAB20108:Phase II/III Randomized Trial of Intensity-Modulated Proton Beam Therapy (IMPT) versus Intensity-Modulated Photon Therapy (IMRT) for the Treatment of Oropharyngeal Cancer of the Head and Neck. UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS (M.D. ANDERSON CANCER CENTER)20 Dec 2023[4]
