Sandeep J. Khandar, MD, FACS
Dr. Sandeep J. Khandar is a cardiothoracic and thoracic surgeon and member of the Virginia Cancer Specialists Physicians Group which practices within the INOVA Health System in Northern Virginia. Board-certified in Cardiothoracic Thoracic and General Surgery, he has a special interest in the management of lung cancer, malignant pleural mesothelioma, and other thoracic malignancies using minimally invasive surgical techniques.[1]
Dr. Khandar appreciates the many advantages of working with a collaborative multidisciplinary team that relies on cutting-edge technology and advances in oncology care to provide the best possible outcomes for their patients.
Education and Career
Dr. Khandar attended Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois for both his undergraduate education and medical education, earning a degree in Biomedical Engineering as well as his medical degree. He completed an internship and residency in General Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where he was named the administrative chief resident. He also completed a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Duke University, specializing in Thoracic Surgery and Thoracic Oncology.[1]
Dr. Khandar has been practicing in Northern Virginia for over ten years and has been honored with many awards.

He has served and continues to serve in leadership roles within the hospitals where he practices, and works to facilitate the growth and development of innovations in surgical lung cancer treatment. He also sits on the advisory boards of leading international medical device companies relative to thoracic surgery.[1]
Research
Dr. Khandar believes that research and clinical trials are vital to continued progress in providing advanced cancer treatments and bringing promising new protocols to patients diagnosed with challenging diagnoses. He is actively involved in studies being conducted by Virginia Cancer Specialists’ Research Facility for Phase 1 Clinical Trials, which is the largest of its kind in the Northern Virginia area.
