Christopher D. Scott, MD
Dr. Christopher D. Scott is a thoracic surgeon and Surgical Director of Robotic Thoracic Surgery at UVA Health and the UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center. His clinical practice centers on patients with lung cancer, malignant mesothelioma, esophageal cancer, and other thoracic malignancies and diseases, and he specializes in minimally invasive surgery.[1]
Dr. Scott specializes in treating patients with end-stage lung disease, lung transplantation, and pulmonary thromboendarterectomy for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. He is dedicated to treating each patient as an individual and tailoring their treatment plan to their goals and conditions. He also serves as faculty in robotic education and training courses nationally through the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American Association of Thoracic Surgery.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Scott attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville for both his undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree and his medical degree. He completed his General Surgery training at the University of Cincinnati, then pursued a fellowship in Tumor Immunology and Surgical Oncology at the National Cancer Institute. He completed his training in Cardiothoracic Surgery and Lung Transplantation at Duke University.[1]
Following his medical education and training, Dr. Scott spent three-and-a-half years at the University of Colorado, where he had the opportunity to develop the Robotic Thoracic Surgery program and associated clinical research projects. As a result of his efforts, the facility was designated a national mentor site for robotic thoracic surgery. He also helped develop a surgical program for patients diagnosed with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.[2]
Professional Memberships and Activities
Dr. Scott is a fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine and a member of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network. He is also a national proctor for thoracic surgery, training surgeons in the community or at academic practices and helping design a national curriculum for physicians.[1]
Research
Dr. Scott’s research interests center on robotic surgery and its effectiveness in improving quality of life, reducing pain, speeding up recovery, and hastening patients’ return to normal life.[1]
