Walker A. Julliard, MD
Dr. Walker A. Julliard is a cardiothoracic surgeon at UVA Health in Charlottesville, Virginia. He has expertise in the surgical treatment of non-cardiac diseases of the chest, including lung cancer and pleural mesothelioma, and is particularly skilled in minimally invasive surgeries, including thoracoscopy, robotic surgery, and laparoscopic techniques, as well as traditional open techniques and endoscopic non-surgical approaches.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Walker Julliard began his educational journey at the University of Oregon, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree.
He then completed medical school at the University of Rochester and an internship and residency in General Surgery at the University of Wisconsin. Following this training, he completed a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Virginia.[1]
Dr. Julliard is currently a cardiothoracic surgeon with UVA Health. He sees patients at a few UVA locations in Charlottesville: the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center, the Heart and Vascular Center, and the Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Center.
Dr. Julliard treats lung cancer and esophageal cancer as well as benign conditions, like acid reflux disease and hiatal hernias. He also specializes in robotic surgery and lung transplantation.

Dr. Julliard is a member of the Richmond Academy of Medicine, the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network, and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
Research
Dr. Julliard’s research interests involve improving treatment outcomes for patients with thoracic cancers or undergoing lung transplants.
He also investigates how the immune system adapts based on environmental factors and the impact that these factors can have on cancer formation and transplant rejection.
His goal is to find ways to alter the immune system to help it better adapt to and accept lung transplants while still combating lung cancer.[1]
